HT Letter - Online Safety

Dear Parents/Carers,

Subject: Safe Use of Technology and Social Media

I hope this message finds you well. As the headteacher at Treviglas Academy, I am writing to address an important issue concerning the safe and responsible use of technology and social media among our students.

Recently, there has been a national increase in the misuse of social media, including the sharing of indecent images among secondary-age students. As a community, it is crucial that we work together to ensure our children use technology and social media safely and appropriately.

Monitoring and Guidance

We kindly ask for your support in the following areas:

  • Monitor and Track Usage: Regularly monitor your child’s use of technology and social media to ensure they are engaging with it responsibly.

  • Check Group Chats: Encourage your child to participate in group chats that are appropriate and positive. Discuss the importance of respectful communication and the potential consequences of sharing inappropriate content.

  • Review Contacts: Ensure that the contacts on your child’s devices are known to them and that they understand the importance of interacting only with people they trust.

Online Support and Guidance

To assist you, we have compiled a list of resources and guidance on safe technology and social media use:

  • ThinkUKnow: A resource providing advice on staying safe online.
  • NSPCC Online Safety: Offers tips and advice on keeping children safe online.
  • Childnet: Provides resources and advice for parents on managing technology and social media use.

Next Steps

  • Open Dialogue: Please talk openly with your child about their online activity and encourage them to share any concerns they may have.

  • Report Concerns: If you or your child encounters any inappropriate content or interactions online, please report it to the appropriate platform and inform us so that we can provide additional support if needed.

  • Stay Informed: Keep yourself informed about the latest trends and potential risks associated with technology and social media. This knowledge will help you guide your child more effectively.

Thank you for your cooperation and support in ensuring that The Roseland Academy remains a safe and nurturing environment for all our students. Should you have any questions or require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us at [insert contact details].

Best wishes,

James Rogers
